More than 1,700 temporary jobs will boost wildfire prevention in the Maule region

Friday, October 2, 2026

Between September and November, more than 1,700 people will work in all 30 municipalities of the Maule region, Talca included, on wildfire prevention. The temporary employment program is funded by the Regional Government and run by Conaf, the national forestry agency, with an investment of about 4.5 billion pesos, most of it going to wages and equipment.

The crews will clear flammable material, carry out mitigation work and prepare the most exposed areas before the fire season, in coordination with each municipality. At least 60% of the places will go to women, with priority for female heads of household, in a region that recorded 9.5% unemployment between June and August (Diario Talca).

If you are looking for work, it's worth asking at the Municipality's economic development office and checking the current job offers in Talca, which we update every hour from the National Employment Exchange.

Why Talca's streets are called 1 Sur, 2 Norte or 3 Oriente: Daniel Barros Grez's idea

Anyone arriving in Talca quickly notices that its streets are numbered by the points of the compass. The system has an author: Daniel Barros Grez, an engineer, writer and city councilman who in 1869 proposed replacing the old street names, which honored families, religious orders and national heroes, with a coordinate grid.

Barros Grez was inspired by cities in the United States that numbered their streets by direction. The City Council approved the proposal on November 27, 1869, and he personally oversaw the installation of the new street signs. Today Talca is one of the few cities in South America with this system (Diario Talca).

Thanks to that idea, finding an address in Talca is almost mathematical: the Plaza de Armas sits between 1 Norte, 1 Sur, 1 Oriente and 1 Poniente, and the numbers grow outward from there. With that in mind, searching for businesses in the directory and finding your way to them is much easier.

Air quality report 2026: no environmental emergencies, but wood burning remains the big challenge

Wednesday, September 30, 2026

The Maule regional environment and health authorities presented their report on managing pollution episodes between April and September. Although there were slightly more alerts than in 2025, the episodes were less intense and there were no environmental emergencies, compared with two the year before.

During the period there were more than 37,000 inspection rounds and 55 environmental education campaigns. The authorities pointed out that wood burning accounts for about 80% of air pollution in residential areas and urged a shift toward cleaner heating systems (Diario Talca).

If you are thinking of replacing your wood stove before next winter, it's a good idea to look into the alternatives and replacement programs early. And if you have health concerns because of the smoke, your local CESFAM (family health center) is the first place to ask.
