Key for exporters and anyone buying imported farm supplies.
Maule is the region with the most wine-grape vineyards in Chile (41.5% of the national area in 2024). Red varieties dominate, and nationally the leading grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, País and Carmenère.
Apples, cherries and blueberries are central to Maule's export season, packed in the region's packing plants for markets such as China, the European Union and the United States.
Tomatoes, lettuce, beans, sweet corn and other Maule vegetables are traded daily at Talca's municipal Macroferia, the largest farm-produce market yard in south-central Chile.
The University of Talca trains agronomists and does research on grapes and wine, fruit growing and water resources, and wineries, packing plants and farm-supply and machinery companies operate around the city.
Water is the backbone of farming around Talca. According to the Ministry of the Environment's Maule river basin study, the Maule River feeds 508 main canals that irrigate 118,263 hectares, and the Claro River —which runs through Talca— another 104 canals for 20,938 hectares. Upstream, the Colbún reservoir regulates the Maule for irrigation and power generation.
River and canal water is managed by the users' own organizations, such as canal associations and river oversight boards. To modernize irrigation, the National Irrigation Commission (CNR) subsidizes projects through the Irrigation Law (Law 18,450), and INDAP has special incentives for small farmers.
